The Best Independent Nurseries in San Diego
In case you haven't heard, San Diego is a phenomenal city to be a plant person. The climate is mild year-round, the native plant scene is rich, and we have more independent nurseries than almost any city its size — run by warm, knowledgeable people who are genuinely excited to help you on your next project, whether that's starting a backyard orchard, building a pond, or finding the right plants to attract more pollinators.
Here's where to go, depending on what you're after.
Mission Hills Nursery
1525 Fort Stockton Drive, Mission Hills · 619-295-2808 · 8am–5pm daily
Mission Hills Nursery has been open since 1910, making it one of the oldest continuously operating nurseries in California. More than a century later it's still going, with an inviting indoor plant room, a wide outdoor section, fruit trees, landscaping tools, a huge gnome, and a resident cat. It feels like the neighborhood itself.
City Farmers Nursery
3110 Euclid Ave, City Heights · 619-284-6358 · Wed–Sun, 9am–6pm
City Farmers started as a roadside stand in 1972. The founder, Farmer Bill, wanted a place that gave away gardening advice for free. That's still the idea. They run free workshops, support school gardens, donate to local nonprofits, and if you bring in a garden pest in a sealed container, staff will identify it for you. It's 1.5 acres of native plants, edibles, bonsai kits, succulents and cacti, and fruit trees, and it genuinely feels like a community space rather than a retail operation. Bring the kids to see goats, donkeys, turtles, bunnies, and more. They have a cute cat in the store too. Don't sleep on their compost and their new soil amendments specially designed for local native plants and cactus.
Walter Andersen Nursery

If you ask a San Diego gardener where to go, Walter Andersen comes up almost every time. It's independently owned, deeply local, and has two locations: Sports Arena and Poway. They publish a monthly newsletter with seasonal tips, run regular classes, and the staff depth is unusual for any retail environment. Great selection of pots, and check their website for current plant availability. Reasonable prices on larger fruit trees.
North Park Nursery

North Park Nursery is small, approachable, and well-priced. Good for houseplants and succulents, especially if you're newer to gardening. The staff are helpful without being pushy, and there's a loyalty program worth signing up for. It's the kind of Saturday morning stop you go in for one plant and leave with three.
Barrels & Branches
726 S Santa Fe Ave, Vista · 760-631-1900
This one's a find. Barrels & Branches specializes in plants suited to San Diego's specific microclimates, including drought-resistant varieties like leucadendron, lomandra, and grevillea. A lot of what they carry comes from places with similar climates to ours — South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the Mediterranean. If you're building a water-wise garden that still looks like something, this is a good place to start. The pottery section alone is worth the trip.
Green Gardens Nursery

Green Gardens has a wide selection, a butterfly garden on-site, and staff who know the local growing conditions well. They offer full-service landscaping if you need it, and the range covers everything from colorful blooms to plants specifically suited for San Diego. Good option if you're tackling something larger and want a one-stop shop.
Jungle Music Palms & Cycads
450 Ocean View Ave, Encinitas · 760-434-1555
Jungle Music carries over 1,200 species of palms, cycads, and exotic tropical plants. A lot of what they stock isn't available anywhere else in San Diego County. They offer horticultural advice and delivery, and the whole place is worth seeing even if you're just curious what a serious specialty nursery looks like. If you've ever wanted a plant that makes your neighbors stop and ask questions, this is your place.
Ong Nursery

Ever had a Rose Apple? It's an apple that tastes like a rose — and Ong is one of the only places in San Diego you can get one. With over 7,000 specimens of rare fruit trees, tropical plants, and specialty Asian varieties, Ong's is where you go to make your backyard a true plant hipster's paradise.
Ace Mega Succulents

Ace Mega is a family-run succulent farm in Lemon Grove, and it shows. The selection covers succulents and cacti of all sizes and varieties, including rare finds you won't see at most nurseries, plus a full range of epiphyllum in every color. They do custom arrangements and ship nationwide. Call ahead — the good stuff moves fast.
A Note on Local Swap Meets
If you're balling on a budget, an insider's secret is that Kobey's and Spring Valley Swap Meets regularly have incredible plant deals — sometimes half the price of retail nurseries. Fruit trees in particular can be a great find, but before you buy, always check whether the variety is self-fruiting or needs a cross-pollinator. It might be fruiting at the flea market, but without the right companion plant at home you may not get fruit again.
